Fabulous Friday - June 20, 2008

Fabulous Fridays give our students a chance to learn English in a fun way. It helps ease the stress of taking their weekly test, which they do as they have their snack on Friday afternoons.

More importantly, it teaches listening and speaking in a much more authentic way. Without a book to fall back on, the students are forced to listen and understand from context. They must learn to answer back from hearing the answers of others and receiving the teacher’s cues through his or her speech and gestures.

Furthermore, it introduces elements of Western culture to the children in a non-threatening way. These elements of culture are often found in readings and tests, and studies have shown that children who are familiar with these things and have experienced them understand and remember the text better than those who have not.

Before we begin, you will learn about some of the important true things in the movie. Begin by watching a video on the Alps and reading the summary to the side at http://www.mahalo.com/Alps. Then watch about the end of winter in these mountains at http://mefeedia.com/entry/nature-prince-of-the-alps-winters-end-pbs/9038536/.

Returnee Links

Peter Hatcher is spending his vacation in Maine where he is riding his bike. Look at these riders. http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=XUk7bete6kQ (There are bloopers at the end, so don't turn it off early!)

Write an advertisement for a vacation in this place. Look at the examples we have reviewed from New York and San Francisco.

You can find additional examples of descriptions about bike trails in Maine at http://www.exploremaine.org/bike/bt_maine_lakes.html.
