Essays
Each child also wrote a 4 to 5 paragraph essay during camp in which they followed topics related to the movies they were studying. Both "The Music Man" and "Oliver!" show how children left to their own devices in a city can get into trouble as well as do something wonderful. Following this theme, the children have described their city, the troubles they could find in their free time as well as the good things they could be doing, and one special wish to do something really important while they are still young.
Below are their essays, in order of the author's age:
Kyoungji Son: Life
I live in Daegu. Daegu is very loud, and the air is not good because of things like cars and factories. In Daegu, there are lots of apartments, cars, people, academic schools, and convenience stores. I think Daegu is easy to live in (even though the apartments are expensive), but the pollution is not good.
When we are finished after school, we can have lots of problems. We can meet a bad person, smoke and drink, and eat junk food. If we do those things, they are not good for our health or mind. Some people might steal my money or kidnap me, so when we are finished with school, we should be careful about other people.
However, children can also develop their skills in their free time. In our free time, we can see some movies and write reports about them. When we see the movies, we should focus on the movie’s topic and time period, and we can write reports about our feelings and the movie’s topic and time period.
I want to help poor people in North Korea. I can give money to the North Koreans, and I can write a letter to them. I can save money and give it to a company that helps North Korea. I can write a letter about how to help the North Koreans and send it to North Korea.
Julie Joo: It’s My Life
There are many people here in Daegu, South Korea. Our school is right next to my apartment, and all of my friends come here to study. There are many stores and several playgrounds. There are many new people coming here, and there are eight playgrounds in this town. There are eight classes in the fifth grade, and the greatest thing about this town is that our grandparents live here.
After school, there are many kinds of trouble you can get into. First of all, you could meet bad people, and they could steal your stuff. Also you could lose your money because of kidnappers. They could use bad words so that it makes you mad, and you might fight with them and get killed. Some of the less dangerous things that you could do are going to the PC room, drinking alcohol, smoking, or losing a lot of your money. Your cell phone could be stolen so that while you don’t know it, other people are spending your money.
Kids can do many incredible things in our lives. One is that we can make cartoons by ourselves. Secondly, we can make a fire. Third, we can imagine as much as we can.
I want to make the deserts into forests, so that many animals can live there. I am going to call the scientists to pour lots of water on the desert. I think about what I can do about the plants that I’ll plant and the animals that will be raised here. I can plant as many plants as I can and raise as many animals as can live here without any problems in this place. These steps will make the deserts into a forest. It’s going to be a happy forest, heaven for the animals in the world (and no humans can go into the forest!).
Minsu Ha: My Life
I live in Daegu Suseonggu Castle Gold Park and near our apartment is Daegu Sungdong Elementary School. Many people live in our apartments because our apartments are big and have many stories. We have a big section of stores, so it is comfortable to live here. Many academies are near Castle Gold Park, so almost every student in our school goes to one of them. Suseong Pond is near our house, and I can use traffic system comfortably.
Would you like to know what kinds of things could happen when you are not watched after school? You could get hit by a car or kidnapped by a kidnapper. You could drink liquor or meet bad guys. You could go to a PC room, eat junk food, or fight with a friend.
Parents must pay attention to their children. Parents have to be concerned about their children. Children must not do work that is related to hard jobs like laborers. I get an injection from a nurse to prevent a disease. Bill Gates discovered the method to make ‘Windows.’
I want to play during free time, and I don’t want to study. I will play Nintendo, and after that I will watch TV. I’ll exercise by running when I have free time. I’ll play a computer game during free time, and after I will be happy about the computer game.
I want to help people in Africa. During my free time, I will not use money so I will put it in the bank then. I have to save money for the people in Africa (at least 10,000 won). I’ll send the money to people who work for poor Africans, and they will do good things with my money.
Justin Joo: Life Is Cool
I live in South Korea in an apartment. My family lives on the third floor. There is a school beside my house, a parking lot under the ground, and a badminton court in front of the building. Beside my school there is a mall. Inside of the mall, there is a hospital and a bank. Under the mall, there is a Lotte Super Market. There is a stationery store inside the mall.
I could get in trouble by doing bad stuff. I could get in trouble by throwing a rock at the car and hitting somebody. I could go to the PC room when Mom doesn’t know. I could steal somebody’s money when they drop it. If I don’t have a bicycle, I could take someone’s bicycle. I could accidentally break our house window or kill somebody in the school restroom. I got trouble by breaking my sister’s glasses, stealing a car key from a person, or shaving someone’s head.
Children must become good people if they are bad. They have to do good things when they are bad. When they keep on doing bad stuff, they will be so bad people.
I will help other people or countries. I will make a giant robot, help other countries, and give money to other countries. I will make a house for other people, I will never ever throw trash on the lake.
Belle Kim: My Dream
I live in Daegu, which is a big city, so there are many cars, buildings, and apartments. Daegu is surrounded by mountains, and the Shin-chun River runs through it. Weather is very hot and humid in summer, and it is one of the hottest cities in Korea. However, it is super cold in winter, but we don’t have much snow. They are famous for sweet and juicy apples. The people who live in Daegu use its dialect. Some people say it is funny, but I think it sounds friendly.
I could get in trouble not working after school. I could go to a PC room or read many comic books. I could get trouble by eating food when somebody is not watching, speaking at the wrong time, or drinking, and the next thing you know, I might make some people feel dumb, do bad things, or not do my homework. I could get in trouble by breaking the glass or stealing something.
Some children do good things after school. Children must be healthy because when they are not robust, children will be sick. Some kids like Carnegie and Mozart do incredible things. Some of the kids in the city make wonderful music.
I want to play with my friends. During my free time I will play Nintendo DS and then take care of my baby brother. During my free time I will play with my baby brother and watch “Oliver!” During my free time I will study for my English test and play a computer game.
I will also buy water and give it to Africans. I will give money to poor people. When I am a child, I will bake cookies and sell them to people. When I am a child, I will make a library and read the books. When I am a child, I will make apple juice and sell it and give the apple juice and money to poor people.
David Lee: My Idea
My neighbors are very kind. Sometimes they give me treats, jelly, and cake. They helped fix my TV, and they are good at cleaning my house.
We have to keep being good. This is a dangerous job. I will get in trouble if I drink something, and if we do silly things, so that our parents are angry, I will get in trouble. I have to clean the room but books are messed up all over it. When I play outside, I get hurt, so I’m going to fix my habits. But that is so hard. Therefore, I have to be careful.
Wow! These children are super heroes! Alexandra Scott sold lemonade to raise money for cancer at four years-old. Ryan Hreljac helped people in Africa from the age of six. At the age of 9, Lin Hao rescued two classmates from an earthquake.
In my opinion, we have to make many machines. My method is perfectly right. I want to be a hero, so I can kill or catch bad people. I want to lift and throw the car. And I want to be a robot. I want to live in a castle and then sleep on a comfortable bed. I want to travel around to all of the countries. First, I will go to the America, so I want to see New York. Second, I want to travel to Africa. I want to fly into the sky where there is Jesus.

I could get trouble by eating food when somebody is not watching, speaking at the wrong time, or drinking, and the next thing you know, I might make some people feel dumb, do bad things, or not do my homework.
